• Department of the Environment proposals to amend the waste disposal laws could have serious implications for all carriers of waste, warns the FTA.
The FTA, in responding to the DoE's consultative document, has told the Department that its plans to impose a registration system for vehicles carrying waste and to link this with operator licensing would be impractical, unnecessary and would not control "fly" tipping as intended.
"The plans are fraught with practical problems," says the FM's manager of hazardous cargo services, Martin Castle. "Would registration only be relevant for one site? Many vehicles visit several sites in different waste authority areas. How would the system deal with vehicles on shortterm hire?"
