AOST of the research work sponsored alby the Institution of Automobile Engineers has been carried out in laboratories at Chiswick, these consisting of a large private house with a workshop at the rear, but during the past year it became obvious that a move to more modern and commodious premises was necessary.. The rapid development of the Institution's research activities is illustrated by the fact that, four years ago, there was only one item on the programme, whereas now there are 10, whilst
during the same period the number, of manufacturers and operators affiliated increased from 28 to 180.
New premises have been acquired on the Great West Road, Brentford. At the sear there are sections for physical and chemical testing of materials, a bay for testing complete vehicles, and another for the simultaneous testing of as many as eight engines. Beyond a car park, there is a further building, containing stores, a workshop and another bay where .certain independent researches can he undertaken.
