III The threat of delay to the start of Channel Tunnel freight services emerged this week as Eurotunnel admitted testing problems on the project.
Although the Channel Tunnel operator says it is still hoping to begin shuttle freight services within two months, it seems ''general slippage" on the testing schedule is making the freight-only opening on 7 March more difficult.
Eurotunnel denies there were problems with ventilation, although it will not specify particular problem areas. "We are running literally thousands of tests," a spokesman says.
The company only recently received clearance for its latticed freight shuttles from the Anglo-French Channel Tunnel Safety Authority. It had to modify the wagons because of fire fears.
