Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Karen Miles • Hauliers owed thousands of pounds by the collapse of two north-east freight forwarders and the disappearance of their staff were this week offered some hope by the police who said they are "hopeful of arrests".

West Yorkshire fraud squad staff studying the closures of Allied Imports and Akcent Europa last summer and the disappearance of four of their staff say it is possible hauliers could claw back some of their debts.

If the four men are found, any assets could be used to recover money to clear debts.

Wakefield-based Allied Imports and Akcent Europa from Leeds both closed within weeks owing UK and French hauliers around £600,000. Two men from Allied disappeared in June and the two from Akcent went missing in July 1993.

Fraud squad staff are extending their investigations to Italy, where they believe Italian operators also lost money to the two freight f o r warders. Of the £600,000 debt currently discovered, French haulage giant Norbert Dentressangle is the biggest loser. It is owed £72,000 by the two companies.
