DRIVERS in the South Wales area ended their six-day strike on Monday after unions and management reached an agreement which will consolidate extra payments made under phases one and two of the pay code.
The 2,500 men will now be .paid overtime based on new rates for the three classes of driver, which have gone up from a basic old rate of £40 for a 40 hour week to £53 for a driver of an articulated vehicle, £52 for drivers of six and eight wheel vehicles, and £50.50 for drivers of four wheel vehicles.
Transport and General Workers Union Swansea officer Tony Duckho use told CM: "We are very pleased, and we hope the members will be, with what we have achieved."
Other clauses in the new agreement include four weeks' holiday after three years' service, instead of five years, and a subsistence allowance increase from £5.50 to £6.50 a night.
Mr Duckhouse said that Road Haulage Association members will also be submitting proposals for accident and loss of life insurance and a scheme under which a driver losing his hgv licence for medical reasons also receives at least the amount he would have received as redundancy pay.
