Ile wowed!

I hope that CM readers saw an interesting article in the Daily Telegraph (January 27) headed -Railwaymen demand end to T&G blackmail.

It made the point that the Labour Party's powerful Transport Sub Committee is to meet this month to demand an assurance from Mr Jones that the union is complying with Government policy to switch as much freight as possible from road to rail.

I understand the Goverment to have agreed that there should be free, open competition and not a deliberate attempt to transfer freight from the economical, safe, fast means of transportation to the other so-called form of goods transport_ We have always maintained the EEC is hell-bent on destroying road haulage. but did not appreciate that our own Government was intending to do the same. It is hoped the drivers in road haulage appreciate that they are under attack!

JACKSON MOORE, General Secretary, United Road Transport Union, Manchester.
