OWNER-DRIVERS' associations due to meet in Leicester next week seem likely to adopt the name British Association of Owner Drivers. They will also appoint a steering committee to get the movement under way.
The move is aimed at putting the new association of owner-driver self-help organisations on the footing of a holding company to help run a network of freight service centres that the drivers hope to establish.
Already the North Humberside Owner Drivers Associa , ton has begun operating Owner Drivers Freight Services (Hull) Ltd and the Sheerness Hauliers Association is attracting new work daily.
Now North Humberside chairman George Kelly hopes to extend the network nationwide to provide facilities for what he considers are "exploited" owner-driver.
Groups have already started in other parts of the country spurred on by Mr Kelly and colleague Harry Boland.
The new association will also aim to make sure that owner-drivers are not involved in any rate-cutting between themselves and it may make some private recommendations on rates to members.
Mr Kelly told CM on Sunday that his own organisation has now been designated as the Hull area freight service by the Transport and General Workers Union.
And under that designation the service must offer loads to local drivers before offering them as backloads to other drivers.
The meeting is to be held at the Post House Hotel, Leicester on Sunday, February 19.
• A campaign is to be launched to encourage more owner-drivers to join the Road Haulage Association.
The RHA National Council has agreed that each RHA area should, "as a matter of urgency", form an area functional group of owner-drivers and that eventually a national functional group should be established.
