ADAPTED for handling by the Rolonof system, a compacting refuse container has been introduced by Sheppard Fabrications Ltd., Thet

ford, Norfolk.

It incorporates a loading hopper at its forward end in which is located a packing plate operated by a built-in double-acting hydraulic ram powered by a site-based mobile power pack.

The container may be situated in any convenient position on the factory premises.

The electrically driven variable-delivery swashplate of the power pack is of particular interest in that the stroke speed of the packing plate is reduced automatically as the pressure on the plate is increased and it has thus been possible to employ smaller power pack units than would otherwise have been required.

Until the compacting pressure is substantially increased in the final stages of filling, the cycle time of a packing plate is about 27 sec., the stroke of a plate being 4 ft. 2 in.

The controls can be pre-set to give singleor double-cycle operation or the plate can be "inched" in either direction.

Depending on the density of the refuse the compaction ratio is about 3 to I.

It is produced in three sizes: a 28 Cu. yd. compaction container is suitable for a Rolonofequipped 16-ton g.v.w. chassis, while a 35 cu. yd. container and a 40 cu. yd. unit can be carried on 18/20-ton g.v.w. or 20/22-ton chassis respectively.

Comparing a refuse collection service in which standard types of 10 Cu. yd. containers are used for the daily clearance from a factory of 100 cu. yd. of refuse having a density of 1.25 cwt./cu. yd. with the employment of a 35 Cuyd. compacting container, it is pointed out by Sheppard that the number of deliveries

to the dumping ground would be reduced from 10 trips to one, Details of the equipment include a three cu yd. hopper which has a loading height of 3 ft. 6 in. with the drop sides of the hopper in the lowered position. The body is tapered to facilitate discharge by tipping. If required, one power pack may be used in conjunction with two compaction containers.
