buses must go up to enable the city to meet fleet renewal charges for next year, general manager Mr. Frank S. Taylor warned last week.
Estimated expenditure for 1967-68 was £2,288.000 £37,000 more than estimated income. This would leave a reserve balance of only £138,000 when £222,000 would be needed for 68 new buses due to be bought next year.
Mr. Taylor's warning led the city transport committee to decide to seek permission to increase the present 4d., 6d., 8d., 10d., and ls. fares by 1 d. from July 1 to yield an extra £228,000 The committee chairman, Ald. John Smalley, said that the corporation's transport was now carrying I30m. passengers a year, 20m. down on the figure for two years ago. "The situation is pretty bad but it is not quite as desperate as in other places", he added.
