company, said to have spent over £8,000 within the last two years on servicing its fleet of 16 vehicles, is to have two of its lorries suspended for one month.

Marlow and Co. appeared before the Eastern Licensing Authority last week to show reason why its carrier's licence should not be revoked, suspended or curtailed.

Mr J. D. Sheerin, for the company, said that nine prohibition notices had been served on its vehicles since February 1966. Two were immediate.

The managing director, Mr Kenneth John Underwood, said that because of lack of space the company had to rely on external garages for maintenance of vehicles.

Between January 1 and December 31 1965, £3,743 13s. 2d. had been spent on vehicle maintenance and between January 1 and December 31 1966, £4,453 18s. 10d. In addition three new vehicles had been purchased in 1966 and three more were on order.

"Since the prohibition notices the company has decided to make routine checks every 1,000 miles, and there has been a general tightening-up all round of the situation," he said.

He added that in 33 years of trading the company had had no previous prosecutions.

The LA, Mr W. P. S. Ormond, said: "This is something which I cannot overlook. I have taken into account the statement by the company that they are now going to provide something which should have been there all along—namely, a proper check of all vehicles at certain mileages. I propose to suspend two vehicles for a month."
