rr HE British Transport Docks Board is to build a £2.5m. 1,000 ft. container berth at Southampton, and a deep-water berth already under construction at Newport will be provided with container facilities if prospective traffic justifies it.

TRANSPORT STUDY A two-year, £160,000 transport study for south-east Scotland is to be conducted by Freeman, Fox and Wilbur Smith and Associates, London and Birmingham. on behalf of the Scottish Development Department. British Railways plans to include a terminal at Southampton in the Freightliner network; and the need for container clearance depot facilities —possibly in association with a Freightliner terminal—is also being considered.

The rapid growth of container services is resulting in demands for the development of port facilities before the pattern of shipping services which will use them has become clear.

The MoT is, therefore, trying to assess the optimum pattern of deep-sea container berths for

the UK. This is essential to provide a framework against which proposals for the development of container ports can be judged.

The Minister has already authorized the provision of a number of container berths as part of the Port of London Authority's extensions at Tilbury. She also has before her proposals for a major threeor four-berth container terminal at Liverpool as part of the Seaforth Dock scheme, and for a container-ship terminal at Greenock. She will announce her decisions on these as soon as possible.

LAST LAP OF M62

THE ROUTE of the final 10+-mile section of the 54-mile Lancashire-Yorkshire M62 has been fixed. It covers the stretch from Lofthouse, where there will be a three-level interchange with Ml, to a point on the Great North Road south, of Fen-ybridge. Passing mainly through agricultural land, the route runs south of Rothwell and Castleford and north of Normanton, Featherstone and Pontefract.
