CM COVER STORY

DESPITE the public attempts by Denby Transport to test the law on longer, heavier vehicles (LHVs), the government is more likely to approve longer-semi trailers for UK roads, claims the trailer industry.

Longer semi-trailers extend the vehicle length to that currently allowed using drawbar coupling, rather than the B-train method used by Denby, which has two couplings.

John Cartwright, director of Cartwright Group, believes the extended semi-trailer is the most likely to be introduced. Cartwright is involved with the Department for Transport study into longer vehicles, and says the issue will be presented to ministers next year.

Although a longer semi-trailer could cater for an extra four pallets, taking the total to 30, they already build double-deckers that can carry 52 pallets. A double-decker with the extended length could carry 60 pallets.

Cartwright reveals that the technology for extended semi-trailers is already in place. and as soon as any legislation is passed, it will be building the trailers.

Richard Owens, marketing manager of Stoke-on-Trent trailer-maker Don-Bur, says feedback from customers and governmentlinked bodies suggest the government will extend the semi-trailer length by 1.95m to match 18.35m drawbar combinations.

lveco has endorsed adopting longer semitrailers with the launch of a UK focus group to examine the potential of the new designs, and the German-built Kbgel Maxx (pictured) has been tested in the UK, to mixed reviews.

If the government endorses the sorts of trials undertaken by the Dutch government for 25.25m trailers, technical specification errs towards drawbar. This would follow the Swedish model of prime mover, A-frame front bogie and/or dolly and full-length trailers.
