• Express Dairies Distribution has expressed its delight at the fuel consumption that is being achieved by its new Mercedes-Benz Actros tractors.
The first of its fleet of 50 Actros 2535 6x2 tractors is currently returning an average 8.9mpg (31.8lit/1001cm) after covering 33,000km; an improvement of 1.5mpg over its predecessors.
Express made the move to 6x2s to utilise the excess capacity of its Gray and Adams tri-axle reefers—it is now fully ready for 41 tonnes. To accurately monitor performance, the entire fleet is equipped with Lucas Kienzle flow meters and Vemis data recording units. All Actros drivers receive model-specific training from Mercedes.

All vehicles are now contract hired; they are serviced through the manufacturer's dealer network. This move was encouraged by the growing complexity of modern vehicles and the specialist backup needed to operate them at maximum efficiency.
