• Scottish hauliers have won their campaign to have a second Kincardine road bridge built over the River Forth to ease congestion and speed up journeys.
The new crossing will be built 2km from the existing bridge, which hauliers have criticised constantly in recent years. There have been safety fears and regular congestion due to weight restrictions in windy weather.
The new bridge is expected to be a three-lane carriageway. Construction is due to start in 2003 with a budget of £70m. Scottish Transport Minister Calum MacDonald says the existing bridge will have to be strengthened to cope with 40-tonners.
Kinglassie-based haulier Tom Hamilton says he is happy that a new bridge is to be built, but adds: "I believe the Scottish Office has to make the bridge a dual-carriageway for hauliers to reap the full benefits."
