Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• UK profit growth for Christian Salvesen's distribution division trailed behind the company's more sparkling continental ventures, the distribution, manufacturing and specialist hire company announced last week.

Profit growth generated by the 5,000 staff and 1,200 UKbased vehicles grew in line with inflation, currently running at 3.6%, for the half-year to 30 September 1992.

The distribution division, including further activity on the Continent and the US, increased trading profits for the period by more than 8% to £16.8m. Continental work showed more profit growth because of several good contracts, including a new deal with Unilever in the Netherlands.

Christian Salvesen finance director Brian Fidler says the company hopes to win hi-tech customers among computer manufacturers in the UK. On the Continent he is targeting new contracts on the back of expertise learnt through handling textiles with Marks & Spencer in the UK.

For the period as a whole, Christian Salvesen increased operating profit by 11.8% to £43.6m.
