• From 1 January more than 300,000 British CV drivers will be able to insure themselves against loss of their HGV or PSV licences through sickness or accident.

The scheme, agreed between the Transport and General Workers Union and the Unity Financial Services and Economic Insurance Company, provides 28,000 cover over a year for a premium of 29.50.

TGWU executive financial secretary Harry Timpson says the scheme was due to be tried out in four regions, but the union executive decided to extend it immediately to all CV driving TGWU members.

Proposal forms are now available from local TGWU offices: the completed forms should be sent with the £9.50 premium direct to Unity Financial Services.

LI A similar scheme is likely to be offered soon by Britain's other union for CV drivers, the United Road Transport Union.
