• Transport-related accidents in the workplace kill 100 people each year and account for 50% of fatal injuries in industries such as vehicle, brick and pottery manufacturing, according to a new Health and Safety Commission report.
Heavy goods vehicles are involved in a third of these accidents, and lift trucks in about a quarter, but the death toll could be reduced by cutting the need for lorries to reverse on sites, and teaching staff to be more careful, says HSC chairman Dr John Cullen.
There has been little change in accident awareness since the HSC published its 1982 study on safety called Transport Kills, claims Cullen.
