When the editor went to Tehran a couple of years ago, he found himself in the Hotel Palma foyer feeling grubby, lost and broke, trying all he knew to bribe the clerk to let him have the key to a room which had been booked anyway.

An ex-sergeant in the Iranian Air Force, he knows where to get the best bargains He is an expert translator and his list of contacts throughout the Middle East is apparently inexhaustible. And, like most Iranians, he seems to have his eye open for the next chance.

As a chauffeur he has no need for a motor car but owns one. This he lets out to another driver who runs a highly successful minicab business.
