A REMARKABLE demonstration of the grip afforded on ice by studs in tyre

treads was given at Cresta Ice Rink, Solihull, Birmingham, on Tuesday before 150 invited guests, who included members of the Warwickshire Constabulary. The demonstration, which included commercial vehicles, was staged by Sandvik Tyre Stud Division on Sandvik Swedish Steels Ltd., Halesowen. Five vehicles were used, one of which was equipped with ordinary tyres. A second vehicle of exactly the same type but fitted with tungsten-carbide studs on all tyres literally made circles around the first whilst this was being driven as fast as possible across the ice. Most impressive was a stud-equipped motorcycle which was driven round the rink at speeds up to about 25 m.p.h.

Proof of how effective these units are was seen when members of the audience were allowed to drive the vehicles. The Commercial Motor representative drove the largest vehicle, a 3-ton TK Bedford. Putting this through figures of eight, tight circles, large, fast circles and hairpins turns, he found the machine to be completely controllable at all times. Some full-pressure stops were made from 15 m.p.h. and the vehicle came to a standstill in less than its own length.

The main distributors for the Sandvik tyre stud in the UK are Kenning Tyre Services. R.D.C. •
