Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

D ECENT developments in the range ,IN-of glands or oil-retaining devices, produced by Super Oil Seals and. Gaskets, Ltd., King's Norton, Birmingham, include the introductiou of external and dual-type seals, and the modification of the design to render the seal :effective even where a limited degree of misalignment exists.

The scope of application of the Perfect Oil Retainer, as the device is named, is much increased by the first development mentioned. The external type has its lip on the outer circumference, So that when fitted to a stub axle, for example, the seal makes an oil-tight joint with the bore of the hub which rotates around it. The tension spring is, of course, replaced by a compression spring.

A possible application of the dual type is to a worm shaft. In this, there are two leathers, placed back to back, so that not only is oil positively retained, but also dust is positive) excluded.

In addition to the well-known construction in which the seal incorporates a separate distance piece, between the leather or synthetic-rubber packing member and the cover washer, a model is now available in which the lastnamed and the distance-piece are replaced by a single member of channel section. Furthermore, the hack flange of the outer shell is indented, and the channel face is pronged to prevent the packing member from rotating within the housing, which it might tend to do if misalignment existed.

A considerable degree of popularity has been achieved by these glands and they are now widely employed by chassis makers.
