Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• If the Home Office pushes through proposals to close up to six London fire stations, more than 600 jobs could be lost and up to 35 vehicles could be cut from the London Fire Brigade's fleet, warns the Fire Brigades Union.

The Home Office is looking into the Capital's fire-fighting resources under its Fire Cover Review, but the London Fire Service says that plans have not yet been drawn up.

However, the firemen's union says the Government does intend to cut operations. "If they make these cuts, London will still be above minimum fire standards but these are inadequate. Such cuts could add up to two minutes on the time it takes for a Tire engine to reach an emergency. Seconds make the difference between life and death — not minutes."
