• Ryder Truck Rental has kicked off its entry into the German commercial market by buying a new fleet of 135 light and medium-duty Ford and Mercedes-Benz trucks and a network of 14 rental dealers. It could boost that network to 25 by the end of the year.
"No market offers greater opportunities for the 1990s," says Carl Simmons, Ryder's general manager of European operations,
Ryder has a contract hire agreement with the British Army of the Rhine to provide 60 full-service contract hire vehicles for tank transporter work. Company secretary Tom Lysaght says that initially the rental side of the business will be.easier to set up, but the contract hire operation will be expanded in the same way as in the UK.
The company also intends to "get into distribution, when we can", says Lysaght, "through the acquisition of a German company, organic growth and acquisition." Ryder's German operations will be centred at Hamm.
