• Volkswagen will offer catalytic converters as an option on its Transporter and LT ranges from early 1990. The Vow-emission versions are based on those already engineered for the German market, and are likely to cost a few hundred pounds more than the standard petrol models, although the exact cost has yet to be finalised.
The decision by Volkswagen to offer catalysts, which was announced with details of the 1990 model range, is likely to prompt other van manufacturers to follow suit. Ford, for ex ample, has catalytic converterequipped Transits available, should the market (or regulations) demand it.
Other news from VW's 1990 line-up (which goes on sale during September) is a fivespeed option for the Caddy diesel; the availability of a power-take-off point on LT40/ LI50 chassis-cabs; and the fitting of a push-button radio on all models. For some models there will be a 3% price increase. Volkswagen's newcomer, the Taro pickup produced with Toyota, is scheduled to arrive around October.
