Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I WAS INTERESTED to read the comments of your 'Round Tablets' about the delays at the port of Dover (CM, July 6). We certainly experience delays in import clearance when we bring our vehicles in through the port of Dover — up to three times the length of those at other ports.

I noted that your colleagues around the table had a very low opinion of inland clearance depots as an alternative, but I was surprised that none of them mentioned the system so often used on the Continent to clear the loads that we export, namely, that of having them cleared on the premises at the point of delivery by a local customs official.

Regretably, this excellent and straightforward system does not seem to have penetrated to these shores to any great degree since we regularly find that our export clearance times are much shorter than import clearance times.

Incidentally, our.address in the International Haulage Guide, Tanker Operators Section, which you published in the same issue, was wrongly shown. It is Nutsey Lane, Totton, Southampton SO4 3NB.
