• The 34 millionth Volkswagen one-ton Commercial — an ambulance — rolled off the VW production line at Hanover a few days ago and was donated to the German Red Cross.
Production of the VW Commercial began at Wolfsburg in 1950, but was switched to the purpose-built Hanover plant six years later.
The first million had been produced by 1962, the second million by 1968 and the third million just three years later.
Daily production is running at 1200 units and the Commercials are exported to 110 countries.
They come in many different forms, including van, pick-up, and Kombi and Microbus eight-seaters. They can be adapted for many specialist uses, and are the basis for the VW Caravette and Continental motor caravans and the 12-seater minibus sold in Britain.
