• A proposed £2.40 a week rise by the Road Haulage Wages Council has been turned down by the Pay Board — because it is more than the Phase II limit of £1 plus 4 per cent.
But The Wages Council has been told that the Pay Board would be willing to allow increases in line with the Phase H limit.
This would mean that there would be graduated increases according to the pre sent wages order levels. At the lower end, a driver outside London on a vehicle less than 5 tons would get an extra £1.72, bringing the minimum rate up to £19.72.
At the other end of the scale. a London driver on a lorry over 21 tons would get an increase of £1.82, bringing up the basic rate to 02.45.
It now remains for the Wages Board to decide whether to make a new award on the lines indicated by the Pay Board.
