• Bulk tankers carrying corrosive or dangerous substances were involved in 14 serious accidents reported to the Inspectors of Explosives in 1972. The worst involved oleum (a concentrated form of sulphuric acid) in which one motorist died and 20 were burned by a spillage.
The inspectors call for tankers built to withstand accident impacts and to remain intact in any foreseeable type of collision.
