National Joint Conciliation Board for the Road Motor Transport Industry (Goods) adopted the report of a subcommittee appointed to consider hours, wages and conditions of employment. This committee was composed of six representatives of both employes and employees. It is the first time that minimum wages and conditions have been laid down for lorry drivers and attendants, and the scheme becomes operative on October 1 next. It is stated that about 150,000 men will be involved, either directly or indirectly. The minimum wage scale is set out below.

With regard to conditions of employment, it is recommended that overtime after a guaranteed week of 48 hours be paid at time and one-eighth for the first eight hours, and thereafter at time and a quarter, and Sunday work at time and a half. A provision for subsistence allowance sets out a minimum of 5s. for a period of rest not exceeding 12 hours, with a further 2s. ad. beyond 12 hours and another 2s. 6d. beyond 18 hours. Recognised holidays and all nationally proclaimed holidays are to be paid for, whilst regular employees are to have a week's holiday with pay after a year's continuous service.

The question of determining the grade applicable to any provincial area or district for the purpose of other than trunk and long-distance services is to be deciied by local joint organizations, but, in addition to theseAhere is to be established Joint Conciliation Boards for every Traffic Area. Any decision by either body is to be subject to confirmation by the National Board.
