THE problem of obtaining the maximum load capacity in vehicles coming within the:3.ton taxation class has resulted in an increased demand for reliable semi-trailer attachments. A. full range of articulated attachments, designed to meet modern haulage conditions and suitable for Bedford 2-3-ton models and Morris-Commercial, Ford-. son, Comrner and Dodge chassis, is manufactured by Flexion Extensions, Ltd., The Hyde, Hendon, London, N.W.7 .9.

• Two models are available—the permanent type and the detachable quickfit unit. The latter, being hydraulically. operated, has a quick-release action, making possible the use of multiple trailers with one tractor unit and thus providing an economical form of goods transport.

The Flexion frame consists of rolledsteel channels, suitably trussed and assembled with high-tensile steel bolts. The sub-frame at the rear carries the chassis undercarriage, and the heavysteel fore-frame support members are mounted to carry the rocking beam and table. Full-width cross-members support the angle side frame and permit the mounting of various types of bodywork without the use of frame runners and frame members. The main members are fitted with tie-bars having a turnbuckle adjustment.

The turntable is made in a complete circle of deep section, so arranged as to give the maximum support to all angles, and the king-pin haS conical and cylindrical faces of large diameter in order to absorb all towing and other stresses from the main locking centre bolt.

The Quick-fit detachable type is equipped with an hydraulic lifting jack and a quick-release pin actuated by a detachable lever and locking mechanism. This operation of detaching and recoupling is simplified by the selflocating king-pin and forward-mounted rubber-tyred jockey wheels running on

large-surface bearings. .

The trailers are equipped with largediameter Bendix self-energizing brakes. The brake layout is simple and operation is effected through a centrally mounted Dewandre servo cylinder and specially designed link action, giving a

direct pull on two totally enclosed flexible cables. The final cable operation ensures that the brakes remain unaffected by spring deflection, steering or road conditions. The hand lever, situated on the near side of the vehicle, gives independent operation of the brakes for parking purposes.

An interesting and important feature on Flexion trailers concerns the trailing axle, which is suitably machined to take the various hub designs called for. -Rear *heels and hub components are, therefore, interchangeable with those on the tractor unit, and spares are easily obtainable.
