Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ROAD GRANTS: MINISTRY INTERVIEW?

The County Councils Association states that the absence of a definite system of indicating road-improvement grants is apt to render difficult the estimation of county expenditure and the planning of road works in advance. The Association considers that the principle involved should be discussed with the Ministry of Transport.

Weights on Bridges : North Riding Conference.

North Riding County Council recently called a further conference of local authorities and representatives of the London and North Eastern Railway Co. and road users to consider the situation created by Section 30 of the Road and Rail Traffic Act, 1933, dealing with the problem of weak bridges. The railway company• is the principal owner of bridges in the Riding, which, it is considered, should be closed to heavy traffic. At the conference resolutions were approved for submission to the Ministry of Transport. A priority list of bridges was agreed upon, and the Ministry is to be asked to permit a portion of the grants for reconstruction to be used on notices indicating alternative routes. The conference had to decide the order of priority in which bridges required strengthening or reconstructing, how the funds available for reconstruction could best be used, and how far alternative routes were available in the cases of those bridges which could not be reconstructed immediately. The resolutions were approved, but the reference to traffic being allowed to use the bridges at reduced speed was amended to read "subject to the weight being within increased limits for the respective bridges."

More Road Offences Since 1930?

The County Councils Association is circularizing county councils to obtain statistical information regarding the extent to which motoring offences have increased since the passing of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, and of any additional expenditure incurred in the various counties. CO-OPERATION IN VEHICLE WEIGHING.

Middlesex County Council has decided to set up in organization to deal with the weighing of motor vehicles, and it is proposed to authorize the county inspectors of weights and measures to act in the matter.

With a view to avoiding dual inspection and unnecessary expense, the county council has asked Ealing Corporation to agree to the former's officers undertaking the work of inspection upon the roads maintained by the corporation, the latter contributing towards the expense. The committee agreed, subject to satisfactory terms.
