Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ONE OF THE few remaining major opportunities to improve heavy truck exhaust emissions has stalled because European manufacturers are not cooperating with specialists. This is the claim of John Pettitt, chief executive of Clean Air Power, which has developed a dual-fuel diesel/natural gas (methane) conversion.

Although the system, which is being tested by a number of blue-chip UK fleets on Euro-3 Daf and Mercedes-Benz tractors, already offers significant potential cost and emission savings, the best diesel replacement it can currently offer is 50/50 with its Genesis add-on electronics. However, by interfacing with a truck's original equipment ECU, Pettitt says this could be raised to at least 80% gas/20% diesel — greatly increasing its costeffectiveness and operator appeal which, more crucially, would kick-start the UK's gas supply infrastructure.

Germany has around 800 compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations, and Italy has long had an extensive network.

Clean Air Power is currently making a renewed approach to all the major manufacturers to provide the access it needs to make methane dual-fuel systems a more viable proposition.
