OPERATORS' VIEW AT THE LAUNCH

TRAVIS PERKINS' GRAHAM Bellman was clearly keen to see the new 'heavy' Isuzu models at close range. Having bought its first Isuzu five years ago, Travis Perkins now runs close to 200 3.5 and 7.5-tonners and the 15 and 18tanners could well feature in its fleet in the future. An 18-tonne 4x2 truck is a typical bread-and-butter heavy builder's merchant truck, and we've already had success with lsuzu lower down the range," says Bellman. He highly rates the backup provided by its dealers, adding: The beauty of the Isuzu is that you don't need to fix it with a laptop, you can do it with a spanner. If they can duplicate the service they provide at 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, who knows how far they could go,"

Wayne Norman of Forefront Utilities in Dagenham. Essex runs 20 Isuzu 7.5-tonners on asphalt and utilities work and is impressed by their durability. He was keen to see the interior of the heavier models as his current lineup of 18-tonne Volvos are getting close to renewal. He has nothing but praise for his local dealer, too. "They've been superb. We've been very happy with the Isuzu set-up." According to Norman: "If this [the 18-tanner] proves to be as robust as their 7.5-tanner, they're on to a winner.

Meanwhile, Stuart Skingsley of Ocado declared he was on a "speculative visit", before insisting, "It's a very user-friendly bit of kit, and in terms of reliability, people tell me it's bullet-proof." Despite running some 550 Mercedes Sprinters on Ocado's home-delivery service, Skingsley says: "There's not an awful lot on the market that can offer something different," before adding that the new Grafter "doesn't kook aggressive. It's aesthetically pleasing for a small delivery truck when it comes into your drive."
