Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A CALL for a wide-ranging inquiry into Passenger Transport Executives was turned down in the Commons last week.

Mr McCrindle (Conservative, Brentwood and Ongar) wanted the inquiry to look into management structures and responsibility to the relevant local authorities, take into account the balance between fares, rates and public subsidies, and compare support from public funds in major cities overseas.

Home Secretary, William Whitelaw, said that he did not think it would be productive at the moment.

He pointed out that the Select Committee on Transport was examining the organisation of transport in London, while the Monopolies and Mergers Commission was reporting on bus operators, including West Midlands PTE.
