Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new Gower Press handbook just published could qualify for the title of "The Compleat Distributor"; certainly it is difficult to think of any important aspect of the subject of freight distribution that has been overlooked by its authors or its 26 specialist contributors. The book's proper title is Physical Distribution Management, and it is edited by Felix Wentworth, now with an international consultancy team but best known to CM readers as distribution director of Schweppes and the organizer of BIM seminars on distribution.

I It is a unique work, running to nearly 570 pages, and to make it handleable the subject matter is divided into five main sections—distribution management; warehousing; bulk freight transport; delivery transport; fleet management.

For £.7 lOs a copy, readers will expect valuable advice, and they will not be disappointed. Transport operators who wish to be briefed in the mysteries of the total distribution concept will find it all spelt out for them; distribution specialists who wish to get a broader view, or check on their knowledge of the latest techniques, can hardly fail to be satisfied by the sheer range and quality of material presented.

Everything from goods bodywork design to inventory and stockholding systems, from depot siting to computer load planning, and from warehouse design to vehicle maintenance is covered, in a logical sequence. One of the great strengths of the work is that it explains a particular subject and then either tells the reader the how and why of applying it in any particular case.

This is a volume to be recommended to hauliers as well as own-account men and transport users; it is published by Gower Press Ltd, 140 Gt. Portland Street, London W1N 5TA. B.C.
