Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE oil-engine boom in France has

swept away many makes of gasproducer for road-vehicle work. Amongst the appliances that have survived, however, is one not previously described in this paper, the GolainPoulenc, which is designed particularly for the consumption of anthracite, but with certain modifications to the cleaner, a great variety of fuels may be used.

Lightness, rather than reduction in size, has been one of the chief objects of the designers, and the outfit has plybably the largest fuel hopper possessed by any machine of its kind.

Lightness has been achieved by employing a patented form of watercooled air nozzle, which penetrates deeply into the furnace. This simple expedient avoids the necessity of castiroll fireboxes, fireclay linings, etc., and the whole generator is constructed of thin sheet steel.

The weight of the generator varies +from 30 lb. to 100 lb., according to the type of engine with which it is to be employed, whilst the fuel hopper will provide a cruising range of 200 miles for a 5-ton lorry. The design of the generator and gas-cleaner is exceptionally simple.

The furnace, which is a continuation of the fuel hopper, has a thin coating of special cement on its interior surface. Air enters by the simple watercooled nozzle already mentioned, which is located in the upper part of the fire zone, whilst gas leaves by an outlet placed opposite to the nozzle, but in the lower part of the furnace. The usual grid and door for the removal of ash are arranged at the bottom.

The cleaner operates on the dry system, gas being cooled before its arrival in the purifier by making a circuit of the lorry in exposed tubes, after passing through a dust box. In the cleaner the gas is first taken through a number of filtering elements, suspended from the top, and finally passes through a quantity of granulated charcoal supported on a metal code.

Gohin-Poulenc generators, which are made by the Compagnie Gohin-Poulenc, 35, Avenue de Paris, Choisy le Roi, Seine, have achieved considerable success in the Far East, not only in the French Colonial Empire, but also in China.
