Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

At the recent congress of the International Chamber of Commerce in e3tockholm, M. Poured], one of the engineers of the Paris, Lyons and. Mediterrenean Railway Co., read a paper on the relation of motor vehicles to rail ways. The service provided by the former was, in his opinion, a prolongation of the railway, and in this connection he cited the development by French railway companies of motor tourist services, especially • in mountainous districts. The P.L.M. Co. had at present

1513 motor services in operation, as against 36 in1913. The services, he said, were run by private concerns, the expenses of which were guaranteed by the railway company, which at the same time controlled schedules, fares and equipment.

Motorbuses also co-operated with railways, and in many communes and departments in France services by such vehicles were subsidized by local authorities with or without Govern ment participation. permanent coin mittee of the Ministry of Public Works examines all requests for subsidies, and is thus able to eliminate abusive competition with railways or existing motor services. We have dealt on several occasions in the past with the P.411. motor services, which are very well organized and receive considerable patronage from visitors to Prance, who find that the motor vehicles offer a convenient means of reaching some of those centres having scenic anti historic claims to popularity.
