Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Interesting statistics regarding Passenger-vehicle traffic are to be collected monthly in the Irish Free State under an Order issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Commencing with the present month, owners of road motor vehicles having a seating capacity of more than six seats (excluding the driver's seat), must supply the following particulars :—The name a the owner ; the route operated ; the distance of the route ; number of single journeys in the month ; number of passengers carried ; receipts from passenger traffic; receipts from other traffic (including amounts received in respect of the conveyance of luggage, parcels, commodities, mails, etc.).

The Order (which is issued under the Statistics Act, 1926, and the Statistics —Road Motor Passenger Services— Order, 1927), provides for the collection of the statistics for each calendar month.

More Meat by Motors.

The report of the markets committee of Manchester, which has just been presented to the city council for the year ended March 31st last, makes special mention of the increase in the quantity of "imported" meat delivered at the Wholesale Meat Market by motor vehicles. Whereas the quantity delivered by the railway companies fell by nearly 1,000 tons to 7,567 tone, that conveyed by road motors from other districts rose from 11,409 tons in the previous year to 14,305 tons in the year with which the recently issued figures deal.

Presenting Liverpool Parade Cups.

Two silver cups, won respectively by es'reenall, Whitley and Co., Ltd., and J. Crosfield and Sons, Ltd., in the Liverpool Motor Parade, held under the auspices of the local division of the Commercial Motor Users Association. were presented at a social gathering at Warrington on October 27th.

Mr. D. E. Watson, accepting the Sentinel Challenge Cup on behalf of Greenall, Whitley and Co., Ltd., said it was a special pleasure that the success gained by his company's fleet should synchronize with his year of office as chairman of the Liverpool Area of the C.M.U.A.

Mr. Huffam, of J. Crosfield and Sons, Ltd., who was presented with the Thornycroft Cup won by some of the

company's vehicles, said it was the third year the company had won the .cnp. -Mr.A. C. Bloomer, who has charge of this concern's transport department, was presented. with a replica of the cup.

Government Orders for September. . Amongst the orders for commercial motor vehicles given out by Government Departments during September last are the following :—By the War Office, one for motor road rollers with Marshall, Sons and Co., Ltd. The Air Ministry gave an order for bodies for Crossley chassis to Vickers, Ltd., and another for S.D. Freighters.to Shelvoke and Drewry, Ltd. -Morris Motors (1926), Ltd., secured an order for van chassis from the G.P.O. authorities. The orders given out by the Crown Agents for the Colonies included one to Morris Commercial Ce'rs, Ltd., for chassis and another for lorries to Leyland Motors, Ltd., and Guy Motors,

Ltd. •

Tractors for Australian Wool Haulage.

A recant Australian mail brings the news of an important chauge which is about to be made in the method of wool transport in Sydney, N.S.W. During the wool season—November, December and January—about a million bales of wool are handled in the city. Hitherto their transport has been mainly undertaken by horse-drawn lorries belonging to members of the Master Carriers' Association. The Wool Selling Brokers' Association has, however, lately placed a contract for the work to be carried out for several years by the Yellow Express Carriers, Ltd., of Sydney. The old horse-drawn

vehicles are to be replaced by a fleet of fifteen 50 h.p. tractors and fifty 17-ft. trailers, which, it is claimed, will be able to transport about 18,000 bales in the course of a day.

Lancia Distributors.

We understand that Messrs. Foster and Seddon, Broad Street, Pendleton, Salford, have been appointed sole distributors for Lancia commercial vehicles in the following territory :—Clarnarvonshire, North Denbighshire, -Flintshire, Cheshire, North Staffordshire, South Yorkshire, South Lancashire, Derbyshire, Anglesey and the Isle of Man.

• For the purpose of ensuring that users' service requirements are met, additional premises are.to be taken near the firm's Present headquarters. The latest service station equipment is being installed and a full range of spare parts for all models will be stodked.

• An Irish Railway's Future.

Recently a commission sat to e2hsider the future of the Clogher Valley Railway, which i8 rate-aided under the baronial railway system. It is understood that the commission has recommended the closing of the passenger service, which has suffered greatly by reason of bus competition, and a drastic rednction of the railway staff. It is stated that the commission has also decided to buy up the interests of the shareholders, who will be asked to accept considerably ' less than the nominal value of their shares. At present £10 shares are value for about £4.

Northampton may want Sixwheelers.

A scheme for abandoning a section of the tramways system in Northampton is to be considered by the local ' Municipal authorities, which will give attention to the possibility of running -six-wheeled buses in place of the tramcars.
