Details of a 15-cwt. Van Which Comes Within the £16 Tax Limit, and a Fast Six-cylinder Bus Chassis.

TWO interesting models ,have recently been added to the range of vehicles marketed by Dodge Bros. (Britatn), .Ltd. These new products are to be introduced under the name of Graham Bros., which is now the commercial-Vehicle division of Dodge Bros. They are a light 15-cwt. van, which comes within the £111 annual tax limit, and a six-eylindered chassis which has been primarily designed for use with light 20-seater bus bodies for rapid passenger services.

The new van might be described as a lighter edition, of the .well-known Dodge Bros. van, which will in future be linown as the Graham Bros. De. Luxe model. The reduction in weight necessary to bring it below the 1-ton limit has been chiefly effected by employing a chassis of 108 ins. .wheelbase, as compared with the 110 ins. of the De Luxe model.. The body also has been lightened in various ways.

The engine employed in this. chassia iS a development of the familiar Dodge Bros. Lsheaded, Lour-Eylindered and four-point suspended unit, constructed in one with the gearbox. It has a Treasury rating of 23.8 h.p., a bore of n ins. and a stroke of 4-i ins. The crankshaft is carried in five large main bearings. The pistons are manufactured from an extremely light allay and have Liver steel struts cast into their sides to give extra strength and to control Expansion.

The dynamo, camshaft and water pump are driven by chain. The, adjustment of the tension of the timing chain can be easily effected by loosening the dynamo and sliding It inwards or outwards in its housing, as required. Ignition is by coil, the distributor being accessibly placed on the top of the cylinder head and driven by a shaft which is geared to the camshaft.

Carburation has been specially attended to, an air filter being fitted to the automatic air-valve type of carburetter and an intake manifold being employed, which is arranged close to the exhaust manifold to form a hot-spot.

The samp holds 14 gallons of oil, which is 'distributed to the moving parts by the combined pressure and splash system. The ,-rear pump, which is driven by skew gearing from the camshaft, forces oil to the main and camshaft bearings and to the timing chain and sprockets. Lubricant is conveyed to the other moving parts by splash.

An interesting feanre is the siphon by-pass which enables the pump to draw oil from the sump should the filters become clogged with foreign matter. Lubrication of the springing, steering and brake-system joints is effected by pressure grease gun.

The drive is taken from the engine by a single-plate clutch to a gearbox which gives throe forward speeds and a reverse, the changes of gear being effected by a long, centrally placed lever. A single-piece propeller shaft, with two ball-bearing universal joints, carries the drive to the spiralbevel gear of the rear axle. This axle is of the 4mi-floating type, with pressed-steel housing and fitted with taperedroller bearings. Semi-elliptic springs are employed at front and rear, those at the rear being underslung.

The steering gear, which is of the worm-and-sector pattern, is equipped with ball bearings, thus making the steering of the vehicle extremely light. The foot-operated brakes are of the external-contracting type and take effect on drums of 14 ins, diameter, thus giving the powerful braking action which is necessary for a vehicle capable of 60 miles an hour, as this one is claimed to he. The hand brake operates on a drum on the cardan shaft.

An interesting featere is in the loading level, which is only 2 ft. 6 ins. from the ground. The standard body, which has swing doors at the rear and an opening leading from the driver's cab to the interior, is 5 ft. 6 ins. long, 4 ft. 5 ins. wide and 4 ft. 1 in.. deep.

This excellent vehicle, completely equipped with 29-in. by 5-in. Goodyear pneumatic tyres, electric lighting and starting equipment and a comprehensive. set of tools, sells at the law price of £250.

,The model TD, Graham Bros., light 20-seater bus or 2-ton lorry chassis is equipped with a Dodge Bros. six-cyliadered, L-head-type engine, having a bore and stroke of n ins. and 4i ins. Unit construction and four-point suspension are also employed for this engine, which has a Treasury rating of 25.6 h.p.

The clutch is of the single-plate pattern and takes the drive to the four-speed-end-reverse gearbox. A tubular twopiece propeller shaft with three ball-bearing-type universal joints carries the drive to the semi-floating rear axle.

A special feature of this chassis is the Lockheed hydraulic internal-expanding brakes. These brakes are operated by foot on all four wheels and an external-contracting type of hand brake acts on a drum on the propeller shaft. The price of this model, as a completely equipped chassis of 13-ft. 6-in, wheelbase, is £575—a very reasonable, figure.
