Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

['HE REDMOND brothers, "leoff and David, whose many rears' association with Seddon ktkinson came to an end last rear, have made a come-back n the commercial vehicle msiness.

Since then they have been oined by a third partner, Ceith Barber, in a new venture o build semi-trailers at new iremises in Runcorn, near Averpool.

The first production vehicle 'oiled out of the factory in rune and to date the company las a range of three basic nodels, platform, platform ;keletals, and skeletals.

Tipper, box, curtain-side ind tilt bodies can easily be idded by body builders, so videning the field of applicaion — or a grp van body can Ile included in the factory Starting with a clean sheet )f paper, Redmond Trailers vere able to evaluate trength-to-weight requirenents without being unduly nfluenced by traditional nanufacturing techniques.

Lighter than most

The result, though hardly -evolutionary, is a semi-trailer ;liftable for operation at 38 gtw, but lighter than most of the competition.

A kerb weight of only 4.2 :ons is quoted for the 12m 40ft) platform unit, which is achieved by using fabricated vide-flanged I.-beam main .iide-rails measuring 450mm :lft 7in) deep in the main body 'educing to 200mm (7ft 9in) in the neck with full width onepiece rolled-steel platform Toss-members at 600mm :24in) centres.

Thick heavy, duty 6mm 0.251n) angle side-raves provide a substantial defence against fork-lift loading. Both cnonoleaf suspension and 10ton axles are bought-in components from Rubery Owen Rockwell, giving-the choice of a wide-spread bogie if preferred.

Jost two-speed landing legs are equipped with rubbermounted pivoted feet which will facilitate up to 10 degrees of surface unevenness in either direction.

A 610mm (24in) high 25mm (lin) thick softwood headboard, standard on all platform trailers, is designed to withstand 1.3 times the weight of the full evenly-spread payload.

The kingpin design, located at either 0.8m (2ft 7.5in) or 1.05m (3ft 5.5in) allows loading up to 11 tons.

Lapped hardwood planks 32mm (1.25in) thick are used with staggered joints in the construction of the platform.

The platform skeletal and skeletal follow a similar construction. All three employ a three-line braking system and 24-Volt electrics which include the new high-intensity fog lights. Rear light lenses are less likely to be pilfered as the locating pips break off if the lens is removed, rendering it unusable.

Both types of 12m (40ft) skeletal are equipped with 12 ISO twistiocks to accept containers measuring either 12m (40ft), 9.1m (30ft) and either one or two at 6.1m (20ft), while the short model with an overall length of 7.5m (24ft 8in) is equipped with four twist-locks to carry just one 20ft container.

Although not an official exhibit at the Scottish Motor Show in November, some examples can be inspected attached to tractive units in the demonstration park.

The Redmond name, with its instantly recognisable solid red "0" is destined to become a familiar sight behind many makes of tractive units.
