MARCUS SMITH is to become London Transport's next engineering director (buses).

Mr Smith is now general manager of the passenger vehicle division of Leyland Vehicles and is expected to take up his new post in November. He succeeds David Thursfield, who resigned in August for personal reasons. A past general manager of Bristol Commercial Vehicles, Mr Smith joined British Leyland in 1968 where he became instrumental in developing and putting into production the Leyland National. In 1973 he became operations director for all Leyland's bus plants.

At London Transport Mr Smith will have overall responsibility for all aspects of bus engineering policy, bus design and development, plus workshop management.

James Duncan is to become a part-time member of the London Transport Executive. The Greater London Council approved his appointment, which will last for two years from November 1.

He succeeds Roger Graef whose term ends on September 30, Mr Duncan is chairman and managing' director of the Transport Development Group and vicepresident of the Chartered Institute of Transport.

Baker West has expanded its coach division to include Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Kent and Essex. In charge of the new territories is David Brason who is based at Glemsford, Suffolk.

Don International, maker of clutch and brake friction materials, has named Alan Crompton as regional sales manager for the North-West of England and Eire. He succeeds Chris Oxborrow who has been promoted to UK replacement sales manager. Mr Crompton, who joins Don from Desoutter Automotive where he was UK sales manager, is based at the Huddersfield depot.
