kt. Fair Trials Abroad is to launch a preliminary investigation into International truck drivers' rights after a 1.2,000 donation from the Road Haulage Association.

The study aims to provide a better understanding of the legal issues facing UK hauliers abroad who are found to be transporting illegal goods.

The research will focus on talking to people Involved in all levels of the judicial system—at home and abroad—to discuss what problems exist and what can be done to solve them, with results published by the end of the year.

The news comes after several high-profile cases where truck drivers have been arrested and jailed on the Continent despite their pleas of innocence (C•12-18 June).

Fair Trials Abroad director, Stephen Jakobl, is delighted with the RHA's financial support: "I view this as the first serious step in trying to solve the problem of international hauliers and the processes leading to unfair prosecutions."

He adds: "We are very grateful to the RHA, but where's the interest from trade unions and the industry? We need to show how serious the problem
