II Fuel savings, smaller communication bills, increased productivity and a noticeable reduction in overtime are among the benefits being enjoyed by courier firm All Freight Express as a result of introducing Minorplanet Systems' VMI fleet management system.

The Peterborough-based courier, which has used the VMI system for around five years on its fleet of 22 vehicles, has also managed to weed out drivers looking to take advantage of the company, according to MD Malcolm Birch.

"It's given me more control of what happens," he says. 'Drivers keep the vehicles in the evenings and weekends and that's one of the reasons we got it. They can use the vehicles for private mileage with my permission, but they weren't always seeking it," he adds. In the early days of using the system, It showed up a number of undeclared private trips, he says. It also showed up spurious overtime claims. All the vehicles were fitted over one weekend, but it was a couple more weeks before they put the base station in. When that arrived, it emerged that one driver had been regularly adding half an hour to each end of the day over that two-week period, which added up to 11] hours over the fortnight that I would have had to pay for."

Through better control over private mileage and the ability to make better use of vehicles during work hours, fuel savings have also resulted, he adds. "I'd say it's around 5-7%," he says. "It's well worth having."

Despite the tighter control over the workforce, none of the current drivers objects to the use of the system, he adds. "We haven't got any drivers who have a problem with it," he says. All the ones who had a problem have gone..."
