PUBLIC TRANSPORT in cities is among the main subjects for discussion at this year's Association of Metropolitan Authorities conference on transport, to be held at the Dragonara Hotel in Leeds from Monday September 26 to Wednesday September 28.

Transport Under-Secretary Lynda Chalker is expected to be included in the lists of speakers.

A more specific look at city public transport is promised on October 8 in London when the Greater London Council transport committee is holding a Save London's Transport conference at County Hall.

This conference will be an opportunity to debate the implications of the Government proposal for a new London Regional Transport organisation.

The transport committee is looking for suggestions and discussions to see what co-ordinated action can be organised to oppose the legislation which it feels will devastate London's public transport.

Meanwhile, the GLC is being encouraged by the success of London Transport's Travelcard scheme. Sales of Travelcards seem likely to reach their initial target of 500,000 three months ahead of schedule later this month.

Travelcard sales are also said to be boosting LT revenue by £500,000 per week more than originally expected. The GLC wants to see proposals from LT to extend the scheme with an off-peak daily Travelcard as well as an integrated bus tube and British Rail one.
