MOVEMENT for London, part of the British Road Federation, has criticised protesters in North London who are claiming that the M25 London orbital route will mean Department of Transport road improvements to the Al Archway Road, North London will be unnecessary.

"Many lorries will re-route on to the new motorway, but other vehicles will take their place," said Jeremy Hawksley, MFL secretary.

Traffic passing through London each day has risen from 23,400 in 1977 to 25,900 this year. Heavy goods vehicle traffic has dropped by 500 vehicles over the same period to 5,90C per month.

The DTp road improvements planned for Archway will need to go ahead, he said, as traffic flows through the area will still be very high. There is still ar obvious cae for a new Archway road, he concluded.
