I I IE NATIONAL Union of Railwaymen was doing its utmost this week to defuse any conflict between it and the Transport and General Workers Union over the planned merger of the National Freight Consortium's parcels businesses.
Last week, TGWU officers accused it of selling out the TGWU membership at Roadline, the company which is to be closed and merged into the NUR-represented National Carriers Parcels 1)i vision In a coolly-worded statement issued this week, the NUR said it recognised NEC management's determination to press ahead with major changes in the loss-making parcels business.
"We formed the view at an early stage that the best way of dealing with the situation was to institute joint trades union negotiations on the NW proposals.
"Unfortunately. this was not possible and we have had to lace up to a management decision and do what was necessary to protect our members employed in National Carriers.
It is clear that the NUR has been determined to keep National Carriers Parcels, and its own membership there, in existence hence its willingness to accept flexible working arrangements.
