Battery Discharge Indicator ANEW discharge indicator has been developed by Horace Heyman Ltd., of Newcastle upon Tyne, which will enable operators of battery electric vehicles to obtain longer life from their batteries.

Called the ESB Solid State Discharge Indicator, this functions in exactly the same way as a fuel gauge on a vehicle fitted with an internal combustion engine. It is completely statics and comprises a silicon-controlled rectifier completely transistorized for monitoring battery voltage in vehicles powered by either lead-acid or nickel-iron batteries.

The unit is claimed to be completely maintenance-free, except for replacement of the indicator bulb, and it can withstand vibration, severe impact and temperature and humidity extremes. It is sensitive to one-tenth of a volt and measures Sin, by 4.5 in. by 3m.

When the battery of a vehicle or truck to which the unit is fitted becomes discharged to a level below the safe operating limit, a red warning light shows. It is claimed that both overcharging and over discharging are prevented, both of which are detrimental to battery life.

Nine models are available, ranging in capacity from one capable of serving six lead-acid cells (10 nickel-iron) to 36 leadacid cells (16 nickeliron).

Aid to Fitting Circlips AN aid to accurate fitting of circlips—a pocket-size data slide—is now available from Anderton Springs Ltd. This takes the form of a strong card sleeve which houses a sliding card marked with the dimensions of a full range of internal and external circlips (patterns 1300 and 1400 respectively). Information on the sliding card concerning the depth and width of the required machine groove in inches and millimetres shows through cut-out windows in the card sleeve.

A table of tolerances is printed on the sleeve, which also has convenient inch and centimetre scales printed down the obverse and reverse sides. Printing on the sleeve (laminated to avoid soiling) is in white and yellow on a black background. Slides are now available on application to the company. Available from: Anderton Springs Ltd., Bin gley nr. Bradford, Yorks.

Steam Cleaner

Steamatic 3,000, a steam cleaner claimed to have only 1 one wearing part, a working life of 1,000 hr. and capable of producing dry or wet steam and hot or cold water, is now available from Warwick Pump and Engineering Co. Ltd, The cleaner is heated by a Nu-Way oil-burning unit having a consumption of 1.6 g.p.h. and is capable of using fuels with a viscosity of up to 43 sec. Redwood. It incorporates a 20-gal. water tank, which enables it to be operated away from a mains supply for up to 20 min., a 5-gal. detergent tank and an 8-gal. fuel tank.

The heating coil is manufactured from fin.-dia. seamless steel tubing; this and the even spread of heating considerably reduces the tendency to scale, a common fault with steam cleaners. The machine will raise steam in 60 sec. and can be completely shut down in 30 sec. A safety valve fitted will shut off the burner when there is a reduced flow of water, a blockage anywhere in the system, excessive pressure build up, or when the pump fails.

A control valve regulates the amount of detergent that is fed into the dispensing jet and the fact that detergent is carried in a separate polythene container avoids contamination of the main water supply tank. The pump will handle up to 300 gal. of water an hour and the machine will operate at up to 100 p.s.i. It is 5 ft. 2 in. long, 2 ft. 8 in. wide and 2 ft. 8 in. deep.

Made by: Warwick Pump and Engineering Co. Ltd., Ferry Lane, Staines, Middx. Price: £270.
