Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PATENT No. 895,801 deals with heavy low-loaders such as are used for transporting cable-drums, road machinery and other massive units. The subject of the patent is the method of winching the load on and off. (W. Sparrow, 224 Chester Road, Streetly, Staffs.) The drawing shows such a vehicle with a road-roller half loaded. A ramp (1) is pivotally attached to the main platform; this is downwardly inclined at the rear as shown at 2. The end of the ramp carries extensions (3) which automatically move into the outward position as the main ramp descends. This is done by fixed cables (4) which become tensioned as the ramp falls. The main ramp is worked by hydraulic rams located underneath.

For moving the load on, a hauling block (5) pulls on a cable (6). For pulling the load off, a similar block (7) powers a cable (8) attached to the rear of the load. Both these blocks are operated by hydraulic rams mounted in suitable positions.

In the side elevation shown, 1 is one of the main frame members. Crossing the frame, and rigidly 'attached thereto, is a dead axle (2). The ends of this axle are formed into rubber-bushed pivots for lever arms (3).

The long arm of each lever projects outwards and rearwards and terminates in a boss (4) for the reception of the steering king-pin.

The shorter arm extends forwards and is pivoted to a vertical rod (5). This passes through the spring unit, shown generally at 6. This may consist of rubber rings with metal spacers, coil springs or , a hydro-mechanical system.

A shock-absorber (7) is provided and buffer stops (8 and 9) limit excessive deflection.

The various items, i.e„ the dead axle with pivots, the lever arms and other details form separate portions of the patent.
