Pfleumatic Tire-filling.

[1,634] " COACHRUILDERS " write:-.-" Will you kindly inform us where we can obtain particulars and prices of Pfieumatie? "

Arum-Ea.—You should address the Pfleumatie (1910) Co., Ltd., of 82, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W.

London's First "Tube."

[1,635] "Bus CO. DIRECTOR " writes :--" Will you please inform ins the date on which London's first tube' was opened P " ANSWER.---The late King, as Prince of Wales, opened the City and South London Hy. on the 4th November, 1890. He expressed the view that it would " to a verygreat extent help to alleviate the congestion of traffic."

Five-ton Petrol Wagon by Hire Purchase.

[1,636] " YORKSHIRE " writes:--" I require a five-ten petrol motor wagon, which I want to purchase on the hire system, payments at the rate of Ll per day, or I:28 per month, Do you think I can get one on those terms? If you know of one, I shall be pleased to hear. It is to work five-ton loads between and Bradford, and

and Manchester."

ANSWER.—You will probably find no motor manufacturer willing to supply a five-ton petrol wagon on the hire-purchase system without a substantial deposit. A first payment of £150 down is probably the lowest that could be arranged_ If you are prepared to decide to make such payment, further specific questions can be answered.

Scott-Stirling Parts.

[1,637] " ALPHA " writes :—" A customer of ours is thinking of purchasing a new Scott-Stirling bus chassis, but he has heard that the petrol consumption on these particular cars is very heavy ; also, as the manufacturer is now in liquidation, it would be difficult to get replacements. Would you, therefore, be good enough to tell us whether it is a fact that these ears are expensive to run, and whether it would be difficult to get replacements, and greatly oblige."

ANSWER.—There is no such thing as a new ScottStirling bus, as no machines of this type have been constructed for some years. We can only state. that, on tho last occasion upon which any information reached us, a certain stock of spare parts was held by Messrs. Patmore, 45, The Broadway, Walham Green, and J. A. Lawton and Co., Ltd., of 35, Hardman Street, Liverpool.. The engines should not be extravagant in fuel consumption.

Country-district Omnibus Licences.

.638] " WALES " write :—" We have just purchased a genuine London motorbus, to be used as a commercial vehicle in this town, and, as it is the first of its kind that has been brought into the district, and as there are no by--laws concerning such vehicles, we should he much obliged if you would kindly inform us what licences wou'd be required for her, or what restrictions would be like's to be placed on her? We purpose using the bus for picking up passengers in different parts of the town and conveying them to seaside resorts in the neighbourhood."

ANswzR.--If you run the omnibus in the area of any urban district council or any county borough, you will require to have a licence for each such area, if you intend to ply for hire within its limits. You can, of course, " drive" the vehicle anywhere and everywhere, as tinct from plying for hire, without let or hindrance, so long as you comply with the Motor Car Acts. Hence, if licensed in One area to ply for hire, you can pick up there and make various out-and-home trips without extra licences. Generally speaking, you require to obtain the licences, and to make the payments that were set out in Answer to Query No. 1,617 six weeks ago.

Spring Wheels Wanted.

[1,6391 "HOUSE FURNISHERS " write:—" Our car is four-cylinder one, of 20 h.p., of the bonnet type; its unladen weight is 30 cwt. it carries its load (15 cwt.) right over the hack axle, and it is fitted now with solid tires. Can you advise us to fit a spring wheel of some sort? If so, will you please give us the names and addresses of the reliable spring-wheel firms. Would the Lynton wheels suit us, and are they reliable for the driving wheels, as well as the front wheels. Our roads are rather rough and hilly about here. The ear will do about 20 miles an hour,"

ANSWER.—If you fit any form of spring wheel, the Lynton pattern is the only one which we feel justified in recommending. It has few parts, which is its greatest recommendation, as the multiplicity of parts in the ordinary spring wheel is one of the fundamental causes of their failure.

One-ton Van Wanted.

!1,640] " CARRIER'S AGENT" writes:" I am making enquiries for motor vehicles to replace horse and train for oonveying goods from market, and distribution in neighbourhood. My requirements, at present, are for a vehicle to carry something less than one ton, and to cover about 400 miles weekly. Can I hire such a vehicle, what would it cost, with or without driver, say, on a contract by the year? Can you assist me? "

AWE.—The first cost of a new vehicle for the work indicated will vary between 7E400 and .C450, according to make and class of body; the inclusive working cost, withmit charging any thing for management., should not exexceed 41d. per mile run. If, however, you arrange for the use of such a van on a contract basis, which usually includes the guarantee to provide a van in substitution in case of a breakdown, you cannot expect to obtain a quotation below 6d. per mile with a guarantee of 350 miles of paying mileage from you, and you may have to pay 8d. Try the Motor Contract Co., Dudley House, Southampton Street, Strand, W.C.
