The fourth meeting of council, for the first session, was held at the registered offices, Hotel Cecil Chambers, 86, Strand, W.C., last week. Mr. F. C. A. Coventry (Great Western Railway), chairman of council, presided, and there were also present Messrs. H. P. G. Brakenridg-e (London Road Car Company), K. H. Buchanan (London Power Omnibus Company), George Pollard (Birmingham Motor Express Company), and P. Frost Smith (Thomas Tilling, Limited). Also, in attendance, the secretary, Mr. Charles E. Esse. By desire of the council, Mr. E. Shrapnel' Smith, hon, vice-president, was at this meeting, owing to his having been invited to take the chair at the subsequent meeting of members and associates. Letters of apology for nonattendance were read, and a telegram from Mr. R. Bell (London Motor Omnibus Company), vice-chairman of the society. The business transacted included the following :— Auditors.--A letter was read from Messrs. Andrew W. Barr and Company, chartered accountants, i, Queen Victoria Street, E.C., accepting their appointment as auditors to the society.

Associates.—The following were enrolled as associates of the society, they having completed the application form and remitted the annual contribution of three guineas :—Messrs. Meade-King, Robinson and Company, Liverpool; The New Arrol-Johnston Car Company, Limited, Paisley ; Mr. E. W. Hart, Luton; and Mr. Harold Darby, London. It was reported that there were now upwards of thirty associates on the register, and that these included the principal motor omnibus manufacturers and leading houses connected with that industry.

Olympia Exhibition.—It was resolved that the council and members of the society should visit the exhibition of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on Wednesday, November 22nd, and instructions were given to the secretary to endeavour to obtain a room for the purpose of a meeting about five o'clock that afternoon.

Business for Next Meeting.—It was resolved that the agenda for the council meeting on October 23rd should include a discussion on the driver question.

The first general meeting, open to associates and members

of the society, was held at the Hotel Cecil, following the council meeting. Light refreshments were provided by the society in the Chapter suite, and the attendance included the members of council named above and Messrs. H. W. Laing (Cambridge Motor Omnibus Company); T. F. Carter (Associated Omnibus Company); H. G. Burford (Milnes-Daimier, Ltd.); Sidney Straker and L. K. L. Squire (Messrs. Straker and Squire); John S. Napier (New Arrol-Jonnsion Car Co., Ltd.); Bernard Metz; John A. Connolly (J. W. and T. Connolly, Ltd.); Harold Darby ; Arthur J. .Liversidge (J. Liversidge and Son, Ltd.); Alfred Grey (the General Petroleum Co., Ltd.); E. W. Hart; Ernest J. Mitchell (the Palmer Cord Tyre Co., Ltd.); A. Oakley Cook (the Albany Manufacturing Co., Ltd.); Ernest H..Arnott (Messrs. C. S. Rolls and Company) ; and F. W. Vallat (James and Browne, Ltd.). The chair was taken by Mr. E. Shrapnell Smith, hon. vice-president, who, after a few introductory remarks, called upon Mr. F. C. A. Coventry, the chairman of the society, to open a general discussion. After expressing the pleasure it afforded the operating engineers who were members of the society to see so many members of the motor industry present, Mr. Coventry proceeded to deal with various interesting points connected with the construction and use of motor omnibuses. He was followed by Mr. Sidney Straker, who complimented the council of the society on the programme it had mapped out and thanked the members, on behalf of the motor trade, for affording manufacturers the opportunity to meet users and to discuss various important features, for he felt that this arrangement must advance the motor omnibus movement very considerably. Fifteen of the members and associates present took part in the discussion, which was concluded shortly after to o'clock. The secretary will be pleased to receive further applications for enrolment as associates from any members of the motor industry who are interested in motor omnibus construction and operation. The next meeting of council will take place on Monday, the 23rd instant, and any applications received before that date will be dealt with. Forms can be had on application to him, and the annual contribution for an associate is three guineas.
