DETECTIVES PROBING the murder of a West Midlands haulage contractor who was gunned down outside his yard in an apparent contract killing plan to interrogate a man who has been arrested for firearms offences.
Officers swooped on a house in Shenstone, near Lichfield. on 6 January and arrested fugitive Vincent Palmer. He was later charged with possession of two firearms and an explosive device.
Martin Silvester, a 34-year-old father of two from Tipton in the West Midlands,was pistol whipped and then shot through the chest as he sat in his BMW outside his yard in Pikehelve Street. West Bromwich in August 2001.
Despite his injuries Silvester managed to drive several hundred yards before crashing his vehicle outside a pub in a nearby street. He died from a single bullet wound to the chest.
West Midlands police made a series of public appeals for help in tracing Palmer in connection with the murder inquiry.
He had spent more than six years on the run since escaping from custody during an appearance at Birmingham Crown Court in 1997 while serving a sentence for robbery and firearms offences.
A police spokesman reports:-A man has been arrested on firearms charges. He will be helping police with their inquiries over the murder of Martin Silvester."
